Dr. Vandana Shiva was born in Dehradun. Her father was a conservator of forests, and her mother was a farmer with a love for nature. In her words: “It is from the Himalayan forests and ecosystems that I learned most of what I know about ecology”.

She trained as a Physicist and did her Ph.D. on the subject “Hidden Variables and Non-locality in Quantum Theory” from the University of Western Ontario in Canada.  She later shifted to inter-disciplinary research in science, technology and environmental policy, in Bangalore. She is the founder of Research Foundation for Science, Technology and Natural Resource Policy (1982) and of Navdanya (1991), a national movement to protect the diversity and integrity of living resources, especially native seed, the promotion of organic farming and fair trade. She started Bija Vidyapeeth (2004), an international college for sustainable living. Dr. Vandana Shiva is the recipient of many honorary Doctorates and various Prizes amongst which the Right Livelihood Award, commonly known as the “Alternative Nobel Prize”.

Her numerous writings include Staying AliveThe Violence of the Green Revolution and Stolen Harvest: The Hijacking of the Global Food Supply.
